Figuring Out Where I’m Going

Lately I’ve been think about what I want to do and where I want to be in the next year. I’ve been substitute teaching, which has been great for earning money and generally getting me more productive during the week. However, I’m still no closer to finding a “big kid” job back in Sacramento. Come summertime, I won’t be able to teach for several months, which means finding a temporary position in retail or some place like Starbucks. This is far from where I want to be going in my post-collegiate life.

Several of my friends are teaching English abroad for a year, in countries like Thailand and South Korea, and others have suggested that I should do the same. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that it holds some appeal to me. I’ve never been outside the US, for one thing, and it really isn’t looking like there will be any jobs available in my field for the immediate future. Plus, I HAVE been enjoying my brief time in front of the class room. I know it’s not something I want to do long-term, but in the interim, it’s phenomenal experience!

Plus, as I’ve noted, it pays my bills.

Traveling and living abroad for a year is a really scary prospect though, especially for someone who hasn’t lived more than an hour away from the house he grew up in. My whole life is here, and I’d be leaving that all behind.

What would you do? This is definitely something I’ll be thinking on for the next few months.
