A Slacker’s Life For Me

  1. a person who shirks work or obligation
  2. a person and especially a young person who is perceived to be disaffected, apathetic, cynical, or lacking ambition(Source: Merriam-Webster)

I’ve been unemployed for almost two weeks now, and although I am actively job-hunting, I’m also not in that big of a hurry to rejoin to workforce. Basically, I’m living the slacker life now. I won’t lie: it’s been pretty sweet. I love waking up at eight or nine in the morning without having “Oh shit! I’m late for work!” as my first thought. I don’t miss the intravenous-drip of coffee I needed just to get through my morning somedays. And the crazies on Light Rail… well, I do kind of miss them. They made the morning commute pretty interesting.

On the other hand, I do miss having a reason to put on pants each day.

But the slacker lifestyle, although glamorous, is not without its faults. It can get pretty monotonous if all you do is spend the day watching television in your underwear. That’s why I’ve been compiling a hefty to-do list of projects and otherwise find activities to keep me busy. I have 25 books in my personal library that are as of yet unread, so I’ve been spending a good amount of time reading at the local coffee shop (see: not Starbucks), as well as blogging. I also joined a gym this week, but I’ll talk more about that later. And of course, there’s always my sizable queue of movies on Netflix to watch. Some of these projects have been on my to-do list for years (reading my backlog of books would certainly fall into that category), so even though I’m not working for a paycheck, I don’t feel like I’m wasting my life in unemployment.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some Jane Austen to read.
