Where Everybody Knows My Name

If the last year has taught me one thing, it’s that I absolutely love coffee shops. And surprisingly, it very little to do with the caffeine.

As I briefly mentioned in my last post: I often like to frequent coffee shops when I’m blogging. There’s something about the change of scenery that just puts me into writer mode. I’m not sure I would have made it through my final semester of college without them, as I would spend hours pounding out papers in various local coffee establishments. Compared to writing at home or at the library, coffee shops were the perfect place for me to write.

But of all the shops I frequent, I think my favorite is the little place by my office: Chocolate Fish Coffee.

Certainly, part of the appeal is the convenience: working nearby four days a week, I’m much more likely to patronize Chocolate Fish than anywhere else. And I do! If I were a FourSquare user, I’d totally be the mayor!

But I think the main reason I love going to Chocolate Fish is that I feel like I belong. When I’m there, it feels like my own version of Cheers. Not only does everyone know my name, but my drink order as well (Chai latte, btw). Every so often I see the employees gathered around a table trying to solve the newspaper crossword, and honestly, I don’t think they’d object if I offered to help. That’s certainly not something I’d expect to see at Starbucks.

Although I’ve been writing a lot recently about my current job hunting, there are certain things I’m really going to miss about my job when I inevitably leave. It’s safe to say, Chocolate Fish Coffee will be among them.
